Nationals Dismiss Acta

POSTED: 2:33 am EDT July 13, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Washington Nationals reportedly fired manager Manny Acta late Sunday night, hours after the team suffered its 61st loss of the year, 5-0 to the Astros.

According to multiple sources, the Nats let the skipper go as the club returned home from a 1-6 road trip sporting the league's worst record at 26-61. The report also said that bench coach Jim Riggleman will assume Acta's duties.

The Nationals are 158-252 since the 40-year-old Acta became manager starting in the 2007 season. That year the Nationals went 73-89, but they finished 59-102 last year, the worst mark in the majors.

Before joining the Nationals in November of 2006, Acta was perhaps best known for managing the Dominican Republic to a berth in the semifinals of the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006. He has managed or coached third base in the NL East each season since 2003. Acta was hired as the third base coach for the Montreal Expos under Frank Robinson in 2002 and later joined the Mets as third base coach.
