KENSINGTON, Conn. -- A Connecticut woman, confined to a wheelchair, is battling a carpet store she said knowingly installed a carpet in her home that can't withstand her wheelchair.Carol Cross underwent a lifesaving spinal surgery and is now confined to a wheelchair. She said she redecorated her bedroom to create a sanctuary after the surgery.Cross said she purchased a new carpet from Associated Carpet in Waterbury. She said less than a year after the carpet was installed, it began to buckle and stretch."I worked so hard doing the room and getting everything right. It was a continual thing, you started to see buckling, then my golly, it seemed like it just loosened up, started moving and buckling," Cross said.Cross said she paid more than $2,600 for the Mohawk-brand carpet. She claims the Associated Carpet salesman never told her the carpet would not withstand her wheelchair. The store's manager, Robert Muller, said he and his salesmen were upfront with Cross the first time she came to the store."She has the wrong carpet, the wrong pad. That's not what we recommended upfront. That was her decision. Because of her situation she was showed commercial carpet with a commercial pad and she didn't like anything like that," Muller said. "She went somewhere else, found a carpet she did like, came back, asked if we carry it and we do."Cross claims she was never told that she needed a commercial carpet. She said she's tried in vain to get a new carpet or to have her money returned.Cross said she wrote to the head of Mohawk Carpet, explaining her situation. The company informed her that it does not warranty any residential carpeting against motor traffic. Cross' claim to Mohawk was denied because the warranty doesn't protect against buckling.Cross contacted Attorney General Richard Blumenthal about her situation.Associated Carpet told Channel 3's Problem Solvers that it is trying to resolve the issue, but said that things take time.
