COLCHESTER, Conn. -- A wheelchair-bound woman whose carpet was buckling and stretching will get new carpet.Carol Cross of Kensington showed the Eyewitness News Problem Solvers her new carpet that she purchased from Associated Carpet in Waterbury. She claimed that in less than a year after the carpet was installed, it began to buckle and stretch.Cross underwent a lifesaving spinal surgery and is now confined to a wheelchair. She said she redecorated her bedroom to create a sanctuary after the surgery."I worked so hard doing the room and getting everything right. It was a continual thing, you started to see buckling, then my golly, it seemed like it just loosened up, started moving and buckling," Cross said.Cross said she paid more than $2,600 for the Mohawk-brand carpet. She claims the Associated Carpet salesman never told her the carpet would not withstand her wheelchair.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Katy Zachry reported that the store's manager, Robert Muller, said he and his salesmen were upfront with Cross the first time she came to the store. Cross claims she was never told that she needed a commercial carpet. She said she's tried in vain to get a new carpet or to have her money returned."They haven't even called me. I have had nothing indicating that they were going to make this situation right," Cross said.Associated Carpet told Channel 3's Problem Solvers that it is trying to resolve the issue, but said that things take time.In the meantime, Joe Scolsky and Bob Gagnon, owners of Colchester Carpet, saw Cross and her carpet on Eyewitness News at 6 on Wednesday. They said they want to help."I want to bring her some samples so she can choose the products -- colors and patterns that she likes -- and we'll remove the carpet and re-install (the new carpet) at no charge," Gagnon said."I'm just blown away, I'm truly blown away," Cross said. "Whatever he has will be more that satisfactory. I'm just thrilled to have this over."
