A Connecticut woman worries that a mistake made by her cable company may negatively affect her credit score.

Rene Cavar, of Strafford, said she attempted to disconnect her cable when she sold her Willington condo. Cavar said that despite recent calls, the company continued to bill her and now a collection agency is involved.

Company Mistakenly Refers Woman To Collection Agency

Cavar said she has worked hard to achieve a perfect credit score and was shocked when she received a collections notice.

"I was angry, horrified. Mostly angry to think that you can spend a lifetime putting together excellent credit to have someone make an error, and then you're marred," Cavar said.

The collections agency contacted Cavar after it was informed by Charter Cable that Cavar hadn't paid her bill.

According to Cavar, she canceled her cable service in August and paid her final bill. When another bill arrived the next month, Cavar said she called Charter and was told it was a mistake, but the next month she received another bill and another apology from Charter.

"I called, I have everything documented. I did pay, and I was assured that I was in good standing with the company, over and over," Cavar said.

Cavar said that when she called about the collections notice, a man named Adam, who wouldn't give his full name, said he was the office manager and that the error wasn't his problem.

"He was rude, extremely rude," Cavar said of Adam.

Cavar said that the problem with the company was so bad, where she lives next may depend on what cable company serves the community.

"I wouldn't live in their area again. I think their service is terrible, horrible. They need to learn some customer service for one thing," Cavar said.

A representative for Charter Communications admitted the mistake to Channel 3 Problem Solver Eric Parker and said that Cavar's account has been credited. The representative also said the collections agency has been called off and that her credit score should not be negatively affected.

Charter Communications also told Parker that it is looking at its procedures to prevent a similar mistake.
