With the skyrocketing of gas prices in the state, lawmakers called Monday for a summer gas tax holiday.

Members of the state House of Representatives called for a Memorial Day to Labor Day state tax holiday to give drivers a break from the steep price of gas.

Lawmakers Consider Gas Tax Holiday

"Connecticut motorists pay some of the highest gas prices in the country, and at a time we can afford to offer some relief, we need to do it," said Lawrence F. Carero Jr., R-Norwalk.

The holiday was estimated to save drivers about $40 million per month.

The average price of gas has increased more than 80 cents per gallon in recent months.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Dan Kain reported that Connecticut drivers pay some of the highest prices for gas in the country -- with more than 55 cents per gallon in state and federal taxes. Connecticut is second only to California and New York for the amount drivers pay in gas taxes.
