Computer Had Names, Social Security Numbers Of Taxpayers

HARTFORD, Conn. -- State officials said a computer laptop with the names and Social Security numbers of more than 100,000 Connecticut taxpayers has been stolen. The state Department of Revenue Services said it will begin notifying affected taxpayers about the theft. Officials said the computer is password-protected and access is unlikely by anyone without specialized knowledge.
The laptop was stolen from an employee in Long Island, according to the department The state agency said it doesn't know if anyone has gained access to the data. Officials said they have notified law enforcement authorities and are investigating."Steps are being taken to protect Connecticut residents from individuals who may try to use this personal information in criminal ways," the Department of Revenue Services said in a written statement. Beginning as early as Wednesday, Connecticut taxpayers will be able to log on to the agency's Web site and determine if their names and Social Security numbers were among those stolen, Kaufman said.Link: Connecticut Department Of Revenue Services
