HARTFORD, Conn. -- More help could be on the way for thousands of Connecticut taxpayers whose personal information was on a laptop that was reported stolen.Attorney General Richard Blumenthal demanded more protection for the affected taxpayers on Monday.
More than 100,000 Connecticut taxpayers' personal information was located on a Department of Revenue Services laptop that was stolen last month.Names, addresses and Social Security numbers were located on the laptop. Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Susan Raff reported that a DRS employee took the laptop on vacation and it was stolen from the employee's car.Blumenthal said the current protection plan by the DRS is not good enough and that for real protection, taxpayers should be given free credit freezes and not credit alerts.A credit freeze means the credit agency must call the consumer every time a company requests their information.Blumenthal said that the credit protection should also be offered for two years, and not just one. He said that each affected taxpayer should be given $25,000 in identity theft insurance and not the $5,000 proposed by DRS.Taxpayers also use the Department of Revenue Service Web site to find out if they were affected by the theft.
