State Offering Identity Theft Workshops
Workshops Come In Wake Of Laptop Theft

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Prompted by the theft of a laptop computer containing the personal information of more than 100,000 taxpayers, the state is holding workshops on how to safeguard your identity.The Department of Consumer Protection, Department of Revenue, state bank officials and state police will take part in the workshops.
After learning of the laptop theft, state officials offered free credit protection services to affected taxpayers through Debix.Those whose information was on the stolen laptop are urged to obtain a credit report.State officials said that there have been no signs that the information on the laptop has been used to steal identities.The workshops are open to all residents. Two sessions will be held on Tuesday, and one on Friday.Tuesday, Sept. 18: Wallingford Council Chambers, 45 S. Main St., second floor. One session from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., and another from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21: Asnuntuck Community College Auditorium Room 137, Elm Street, Enfield, 6 to 7 p.m. For more information, visit the Department of Consumer Protection Web site.
