HARTFORD, Conn. -- The State Treasury published the names of more than 45,000 people who are owed money by the state. The list appeared Thursday in newspapers throughout the state and will be published on the treasury's Web site.State officials said new names are added weekly to the Web site."Each year, the state treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed funds because owners may have lost or inherited something of value," said state Treasurer Denis Nappier. The state treasurer's office published in newspapers across the state on Thursday a list of 45,000 people owed money by the state."We have money and some of it may be yours," Assistant Deputy Treasurer Maria Greenslade said.If you don't see your name on the published list, there's also a complete list on the treasurer's Web site that includes 450,000 names and $456 million in unclaimed money."The money comes from forgotten savings accounts, it could come from uncashed payroll checks because you left an employer and then they could not follow up with you, it could be that you moved and your forwarding address has expired," Greenslade said.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Irene O'Connor reported that a majority of people receive $1,000 or less. But some amounts have been larger."The largest claim that we've paid under Treasurer Nappier's administration was about $700,000 at the beginning of this past year," Greenslade said.If you see your name on the list, you can download a form on the treasurer's Web site and submit it to the state. It may take about 90 days to send the money.
