BLOOMFIELD, Conn. -- A Bloomfield company has found a new way to clean soil at contaminated sites.Verutek Technologies claims it has found a better approach to the old way of cleaning a contaminated site, which was to move the soil from one site to a dump. The company has found a way of cleaning the soil underground by injecting it with biodegradable solutions that continue cleaning even after the contaminants are gone."We're really the first company that does sub-surface remediation. We use plant sufactants like soaps -- they're biodegradable .. actually some of the stuff we use -- coconut oil, castor oil, are used in air fresheners," said Verutek CEO John Collins.
With hundreds of thousands of sites across the country needing to be cleaned, Verutek is constantly proving that its system works.Collins showed Eyewitness News images of 100-year-old coal tar in the ground before being transformed into clean sand."We did this in about three weeks so we're pretty pleased with the result. This is all biodegradable and nothing went off site," Collins said. "There's contamination under buildings now, and we can actually inject this, it goes beneath buildings. It's harmless, it doesn't affect anybody, and we can actually remedy contamination."
