AG Warns Of Cell Phone Spam

Advertisers Sending Text Messages

POSTED: 4:44 pm EDT March 20, 2008

Spam can clog up the inbox of your e-mail account and is now beginning to hit cell phones.

State officials claim that a group of rogue companies are sending text ads to cell phones.

"A lot of people check their phone during meetings and whatnot to see if there is a family emergency or if they are needed somewhere. If they get an advertisement or some type of message -- I think is wrong," said cell phone user Jay Trancell.

State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said that if the companies don't have the consumer's permission, it is illegal to send the message to cell phones.

"We want to know from people when they receive it because we want to track them down. We're working with other states so we can stop it," he said.
