DANBURY, Conn. -- While electric bills continue to rise in Connecticut, a California company claims that one of its products can reduce electric costs.Just to the left of Bob Keller's breaker box silently sits a small, silver box that Keller says is already saving him money on the electric bill to his Danbury home."I put it in a couple of months ago and … in March and April, we saved in the neighborhood of $75 between the two months," he said. The box is called the Power Save 1200 and Eyewitness News has been told it's able to conserve leftover electricity from appliances that have motors, such as the microwave, range hood, clothes dryer and garage door.
The philosophy behind the Power Safve is that the motor-based appliances in homes pull in more kilowatts than homeowners actually use. The leftover flows out of the home, wasted. The Power Save 1200 is said to store the wasted power that has already been paid for, for future use.Electrician Darryl Johnson of Power-Up Electric sells and installs the devices in Connecticut. He said he has already installed about two dozen."Pretty much, it is what they say it is. I mean, you could save up to 25 percent. The average savings is between 15 and 20 percent, which is still pretty substantial for the average person having over a 4100 electric bill per month," he said.Johnson said the product also works as a surge protector."It protects against any … arching of wires that may occur in your home that could short out any electronics or appliances in your home," he said. The Power Save 1200 itself costs about $300, but must be installed by an electrician.Keller said that even with the installation costs, it won't take him long to get the investment back."It was about $750 installed, and I figured somewhere -- depending on what happens with energy rates -- somewhere between a year and two years, we'll have all that money recouped, so after that it's just savings," he said.Channel 3's sister station in Atlanta tested the device with a family there over a three-month period. That family saw savings similar to what Keller saw during the fist few months of use. They said they saved between $15 and $20 per month.More Information:Link:Power Up Electric Link:Power Save 1200
