State Offering Heating Assistance Options

United Way Is There To Help, Authorities Say

The United Way 211 center is set up to give information on many state programs and support groups, from gambling to the homeless.

These days, authorities there said they’re getting a lot of calls from people who are worried about skyrocketing fuel costs.

Gov. Jodi Rell and legislators said they realize many people won't be able to afford to heat their homes this winter.

In response, they said, they came up with two programs.

One is for a rebate of up to $500 for homeowners to buy energy-efficient furnaces.

The other is for winter heating relief for low-income families, they said. This would give $400 to $675 to homeowners and renters where heat is not included and up to $270 for tenants where heat is included.

For full eligibility requirements or to apply, call the Department of Social Services’ Winter Heating Aid hot line at 800-842-1132 or visit its Web site to find out eligibility requirements.
