There’s a 5,000-square-foot house in New London, Conn., that could be your dream home and it may only cost you $1, local station WFSB reported. The Shiloh Baptist Church, which owns the property, is selling the home for $170,000.But if you’re willing to move the house to another location, the church is willing to sell it for $1.The house was built in 1866. Though it’s in need of repairs, church officials said, it’s a solid structure.
Last year, the house was featured in "This Old House" magazine. While their have been several interested parties who admire the huge windows and winding staircase, the church said no one has come through to buy it for the $170,000 asking price. Now the owners are opting to sell it for what they paid.“Saving this house in this National Register neighborhood would mean so much for urban renewal, for restoration of the whole neighborhood,” said Preservation Society member Sandra Chalk. The house sits just a few doors away from another famous landmark: the Suzette Kelo House that was moved from Ft. Trumbull last year. It became an icon for the fight against eminent domain. The church’s house is another case of restoration, not demolition, officials said. All they have to do is find a savior, they said.“There are people who recognize that by restoring the neighborhood there is long-term economic advantage there,” said Chalk. There’s also a benefit for New London, she said. If the property is sold for $170,000, it goes back onto the tax rolls.
