WATERBURY, Conn. -- The U.S. postal Service has reported that business is not good in Waterbury. The people who work there said they’re not too thrilled about what that means. One employee, who has worked at the post office since the 1980s, said 400 people once worked there. Now, the postal workers inside the main Waterbury post office said they can barely fill the place. The USPS officials said things have changed all over. They said business is way down.In Connecticut alone, they said, at least 117 positions are expected to be cut or excised.“What excised really means is 21 of our workers in Waterbury will be relocated 100 or 500 miles away,” state Sen. Joan Hartley said. “I call that a layoff."State legislators and U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy voiced their concerns outside the Waterbury Post Office on Tuesday.“The post office has to get its act together,” he said. The USPS officials said business at the Waterbury office alone is down 50 percent from this time last year.A spokesperson said nobody's job will be cut, but at least 20 people could be offered positions at other locations. But some postal workers said a move would be a burden. One said that could mean getting another vehicle, additional insurance, and paying for gas and other expenses. That's making it even more difficult for the people who always thought they had the most secure job in government,” USPS officials said.As of right now, USPS officials said, nobody is being notified about any changes.
