Calypso Steel Toy Drums have been voluntarily recalled due to excessive levels of lead in the paint.

The Department of Consumer Protection and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall Tuesday. They said the product was manufactured in Trinidad for Woodstock Percussion Inc., of Shokan, N.Y. They said the product was sold nationwide at various retail establishments, through mail order catalogues and on Web sites, from December 2006 through December 2007, for approximately $50 to $100.

The recalled drum is made of steel and comes with two wooden drum sticks and a wooden stand, officials said. The drum sides are painted red and the drum pan is painted black with silver markings. Each rim is stamped with a No. 5 or No. 6, but not all drums stamped with No. 5 are affected by this recall. The surface paint on this toy contains excessive levels of lead.

Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell Jr. said consumers should check for the toy drum in their homes. If found, he said, it should be removed from a child and returned to Woodstock Percussion for a replacement drum and a $5 credit or payment.

No injuries or incidents have been reported, Farrell said, but lead is toxic and, if ingested, it can cause serious health issues, especially in children. For additional information, please contact Woodstock Percussion toll free at 866-543-2848 anytime, or visit its Web site.
