WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Knock-off electrical products at discount stores are causing major problems, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International.Sandra Geddes said she buys no-name electrical products on purpose."Time, economy, it's saving a buck," she said. But Brett Brenner, who runs the Electrical Safety Foundation International, said those items at bargain center stores can pose problems."We know people are trying to save money where they can, and unfortunately, criminals know this and they're looking to bring unsafe products on the market," he said. "We've noticed a big increase with counterfeit extension cords, cell phone batteries and power strips, in general."Brenner said phony electrical products found in cost-saving stores can cause fires, explosions, even electrocution, because fake products aren't tested for safety standards."We're telling people to be cautious, where to purchase stuff, in general reduce electronic-related deaths and injuries through public education," he said.Brenner said the foundation also advises consumers to avoid buying electrical products online unless they know exactly where they are coming from and whether the product is legitimate.
