MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The land on which the Shiloh Christian Church stands in Middletown has been sold, which means that in one piece or in several, the church has to go.The church, which has served a number of congregations, has stood in town for 150 years. Just up from the corner of East Main and Main streets, the church was built in the 1860s when the land it rests on was privately owned."If we can sell the whole church in one shot to somebody who wants to reassemble it somewhere, that would be an ace in the hole," said Fred Cogliati, of Antiques on the Green. "And if that doesn't happen, we're just going to piece it out, and there will be pieces all over the country."All but six of the stained-glass windows will be sold, Cogliati said. He said those six are set to go into the new church that will be built across town.Buyers will also be responsible for getting the windows out on their own, Cogliati said. That rule also applies to the rest of the pieces, from the lighting fixtures on the ceiling to the boiler in the basement, he said. The pipe organ, an I.W. Steel from Springfield, is in working order, Cogliati said, and is on the chopping block, along with the pews, the brass and chestnut pulpit and the chestnut woodwork, doors, walls, beams and floorboards. The sale is set for June 19 to 21, he said, but there is an option to buy early."Everything is priced out, so if somebody wants to come right now and buy it as the price, they can buy it and own it," Cogliati said. "If not, they can leave an offer, and if it's approved by the pastor, they can own it then."Everything sold has to be removed by July 1, he said, when what is left will be leveled."Whatever isn't bought, unfortunately, will be destroyed, but hopefully we believe most of the good stuff will be saved," Cogliati said. "That's what we want to do."For more information, click here.
