Company Recalls Tuna Steaks

Products Recalled Due To Histamine Levels

POSTED: 3:32 pm EDT July 1, 2009

Fresh tuna steaks sold at Shaw's, Star Market and Big Y grocery stores in New England have been recalled due to possible elevated levels of histamine, Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell Jr. said on Wednesday.

North Coast Seafood, of South Boston, recalled recalled the products because the high histamine levels can cause symptoms such as a tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, rash on the face and upper body, hives and itchy skin, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

The company said three incidents in which consumers experienced some of the symptoms have been reported.

"Customers who purchased fresh tuna steaks from Shaw's, Star Market or Big Y stores in the past few weeks and still have them in their freezer would be wise to bring them back to the store for a full refund or replacement," Farrell said. "The affected product was in retail stores throughout New England from June 20 through June 24."

Anyone with questions can call North Coast Seafood at 617-345-4410, ext. 260.
