Postal Service Debates Closing 13 Offices

Offices Located Across Connecticut

Thirteen Connecticut post offices are on a list released by the U.S. Postal Service for possible shutdown or consolidation.

A USPS spokeswoman said the list is part of a study to determine whether the closings and consolidations will save money.

Offices on the list include branches in Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven and Stamford.

Spokeswoman Maureen Marion said no decision has been made on shutting down the branches on the list, but that they are under review.

Marion said the postal service will be looking at customer service, delivery routes, rent, parking lots and many other factors to decide which ones will close.

When customers at the Kilby Station Post Office in New Haven learned that the U.S. Postal Service was considering closing the branch, they were upset.

"I was really shocked because we need it in the area," New Haven resident Ceacea Gilchrist said. "It's convenient. They have wonderful personalities, they're friendly, and they're an asset to our area."

Residents said they're worried that closing the building would mean they have to trade their small, neighborhood branch for the hulking mega Post Office downtown.

"It would be detrimental to the community," resident John Dye said. "The next one is the Brewery Street. Could you imagine some of these senior citizens trying to get to Brewery Street?"

At the Kilby office, the workers said they're encouraging customers to write the postmasters if they're upset, since nothing will be done without hearing from the community first.

"I would like to know when they're going to have a hearing, if they'll have a hearing, so I can put my two cents in," Dye said.

A decision on when something will be done, if anything, won't be made until the end of the summer, officials said.

The post offices that will be studied include:

  • Nobel office in Bridgeport
  • Barnum office in Bridgeport
  • Glenbrook office in Stamford
  • Old State House office in Hartford
  • Blue Hills office in Hartford
  • East Hartford office
  • West Hartford office
  • Trolley Square office in New Haven
  • Kilby office in New Haven
  • Baybrook office in New Haven
  • Mt. Carmel office in New Haven
  • Westville office in New Haven
  • West Avenue office in Stamford
