Co. Angling For Grant To Create Jobs

Federal Grant Could Bring 600 Jobs To State

There's a chance that about 600 new jobs could come to Connecticut, but it hinges on whether a local company receives a grant from the federal government.

The company and its supporters pitched their case on Thursday as to why the money, which would be used to make batteries for electric cars, should be given to Enfield. The group said the money could help drive the economy forward.

Yardney President Vince Yevoli said he's angling for a $38 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. He said the money would allow his Pawcatuck-based company to partner with California-based Coda Automotive to create the batteries.

He said the business -- and the 600 jobs -- are at stake if the money doesn't come through.

If Yardney-Coda receives the funding, Yevoli estimated that it could initially create 30 jobs, and reach 600 after three years.

The plant would be set up on Taylor Road at the old Lego manufacturing facility.

State and local officials worked Thursday to show how much support the project has in the community.

U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney said he hopes to know this summer if the partnership will receive the grant.

If the grant comes through, Yevoli said, the company would start buying equipment in the fall.
