WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- With some properties in West Hartford being added to FEMA's flood maps, residents are questioning whether they will have to pay more for flood insurance.Maryellen Thibodeau said she learned at a meeting held Tuesday night on the issue that part of her property falls under FEMA's high-risk flood plan, meaning she may be forced to buy flood insurance."It's just a little part of our front lawn," she said. "Well, I don't know how expensive it will be."The cost can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars each year, state Rep. John Larson said, depending on how the big the property is that needs to be covered. The Thibodeaus are on a list of about 100 West Hartford properties that the town said are affected by FEMA's new maps. They said older maps are more generalized, but that newer technology and better data pinpoint properties more accurately.Larson said his office has received more than 100 phone calls about the change. He said FEMA's position is that people need to understand and manage their risk."We often hear, 'I've been here 50 years, never flooded,'" mapping expert David Mendelsohn said. "Well, the world is dynamic."The Tuesday meaning was held to allow residents to ask questions and get information on what the flood maps mean for them, officials said. They said residents who attend the meeting will also learn more about how to appeal if they don't believe their properties should be in a flood zone.
