SWAT Responds To Bank Robbery

UPDATED: 9:36 pm EST November 17, 2006

A suspicious package left behind during a bank robbery turned out to be a purse.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Teresa Lebarera reported a woman entered the Charter Oak Credit Union in Groton with a note. All employees of the bank were ordered out of the bank.

"We were robbed today. We were all asked to evacuate the building," said Brian Orenstein, the credit union's CEO.

"A white female entered the bank and came up to the teller and put a black purse in front of the teller," Groton police Officer Scott Sanford said. "The female gave the teller a note, which stated that there was a bomb in the purse and demanded five $500 bills."

Authorities closed Benham Road and Chicago Avenue to allow the bomb squad to suit up and investigate a purse left behind by the suspect. Authorities did not find any explosives.

Police described the suspect as a woman in her early 20s who is 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds and has brown hair. Police said the woman fled in a car that has a unique marking.

"What was unique about the car was that the passenger door was orange and red," Sanford said.
