Woman Arrested For Allegedly Stabbing Her Children

Police arrested a Hartford woman in connection with the stabbing of her own children Saturday morning.

Detectives of the Hartford police arrested Carmela Ortiz, 22, at her home -- 145 Ashley St.

She was arrested in connection with the stabbing of her three children -- 2-year-old twins and a 7-month-old baby, early Saturday morning.

"She's been charged by Hartford police with three counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, three counts of assault first degree, and we possibly expect further charges," said Nancy Mulroy, of the Hartford Police.

Ortiz, who has received medical evaluation and remained under observation at a local hospital, was being held in custody on $2.5 million bond. Police still don’t know why Ortiz stabbed her children, but she may have attempted to hurt herself as well.

"As far as motive, that's part of our investigation, and it's premature to speculate,” said Mulroy.

The twin boys were airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital and her youngest son was rushed to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. The latest medical reports had the children in critical condition, but were expected to survive their injuries.

Neighbors along Ashley St. were shocked by the news.

"I'm without words right now because of what happened,” said Dasha James, one of Ortiz’s neighbors. "I just feel for the kids basically, I just feel for the kids."
