Police: Woman Filed False Rape Claim

Bushnell Park Rape Case Dropped

UPDATED: 1:26 am EST December 28, 2006

A woman admitted to police Wednesday that she made a false claim about being raped in Bushnell Park, according to police.

The woman originally told police that a stranger raped her in the middle of the afternoon in the Hartford park’s carousel. Police said the woman now claims that a man she knew raped her, but wouldn’t disclose the location of the attack.

For the six weeks following the rape claim, police increase patrols to the park.

“It’s unfortunate that the perception of public safety in our downtown park had to be compromised by this event,” said Ronald Morneault, president of Business for Downtown Hartford.

Police said that in a follow-up interview Wednesday, the woman admitted that she had made a false claim to police. Police said they dropped the case because the woman won’t disclose who raped her or where.

The woman will not be charged for filing a false report, according to police.

Hartford police assured the public that Bushnell Park is a safe place to visit.
