Rell Questions Activist's Arrest

The arrest of a man at Gov. M. Jodi Rell's inaugural parade has led to the governor's request for a complete review of the Department of Public Safety.

Rell, in a letter to the public safety commissioner, said she was disturbed to learn about a list of allegedly suspicious individuals police are monitoring.

Activist Ken Krayeske, 34, was arrested on the governor's parade route last Wednesday. Hartford police said Krayeske dropped the mountain bike he was riding along the parade route and charged toward Rell.

Krayeske, who ran the Green Party campaign for governor, said he was working as a free-lance journalist and was standing on the sidewalk taking pictures.

He said he believes he was put on state police radar after he heckled Rell during her campaign for not meeting with his candidate.

Police said prior to the inauguration comments were made on a political blog that posed a threat to the governor and may have put Krayseke on a list.

"We don't know that there's some sort of permanent list people are on. It does raise questions about how intelligence is being handled in this state," said Rep. Denise Merrill.

In the letter, Rell asked for a complete review of the incident and how public safety is handled across the state.

Rell said state officials cannot trample the rights individuals when providing security and protection.

"I would like to know how this individual came to the attention of state police and the circumstances which his name and photo were provided to the Hartford Police Department," Rell wrote in the letter. "The parade was a public event, people also have the right to protest."

Krayeske was charged with breach of peace and interfering with a police officer.
