A University of Connecticut freshman who was hit while crossing a street died Monday morning.

Police continue to search for the driver of a sport utility vehicle or pickup truck that they said hit 19-year-old Carlee Wines, of Manalapan, N.J., on Saturday and took off.

Hartford Hospital confirmed to Eyewitness News late Monday morning that Wines had died.

Police said Wines was walking to her dorm room and had stepped off the curb to cross North Eagleville Road around 2 a.m. when she was hit. She had suffered serious injuries.

"I think everyone's depressed or sad. We're going to miss her a lot … she was a really good person," said UConn student Derek D'Agostino. "It could have been anyone. It could have been me. We all walk between there all the time."

Wines was a freshman majoring in pre-kinesiology, the study of the body's movement, UConn officials said.

Authorities described the vehicle as a light-colored or white SUV or pickup truck that could have front-end damage.

Police said they believe there was a passenger inside the vehicle.

"We are living through a parent's worst nightmare," The Wines family said in a statement Monday. "For the person operating the vehicle: You have taken our precious daughter from this world. We pray and beg for you to now take responsibility."

UConn police said they had spoken to thousands of people and posted fliers and messages throughout the school in hopes of obtaining information leading to the vehicle's operator.
