Woman Claims Neighbor's Mailbox Is Obscene

POSTED: 5:12 pm EST January 30, 2007
UPDATED: 7:01 pm EST January 30, 2007

A Pomfret mailbox is at the center of controversy between two neighbors.

Pam Lee said she is offended by the mailbox of her neighbor who lives across the street. The mailbox is located in Lee's front yard.

"It's very sexually oriented, very offensive and very risqué," Lee said.

The mailbox, owned by Pixie Ray, is adorned with the silhouette of a mermaid. Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Dan Kain reported that the fence in front of Ray's home is also decorated with similar silouhettes.

Ray said that the mermaid is sexually explicit and that she wants it removed.

"It's offensive to me and my family. I have a 17-year-old daughter. I have school buses that go by, and we have to look at this artwork that wouldn't be seen on a magazine in Wal-Mart," Lee said.

Lee and her husband previously destroyed the mailbox, but found themselves in trouble with the town.

The Lees are now looking for the town of Pomfret to take action.

"It's a grey area. We have been in touch with state police, the postal office to try to come up with some sort of resolution. I haven't got the right answer yet I guess," said Pomfret First Selectman Jim Rivers.

The United States Postal Service told Lee that it is not its job to censor patrons.
