NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- A college newspaper's opinion piece satirizing rape has sparked a campus meeting in the week following its publishing.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Irene O'Connor reported students met at Central Connecticut State University in the noon hour to clear the air about exactly what happened."The rumors are that we need to fire John Petroski, there are so many rumors going around that we don't really know what to think anymore," CCSU freshman Victoria Sawtelle said. The controversy started last week after an article written by Petroski made light of rape. The article was published in the school newspaper last Friday.Eyewitness News learned just before noon that the state victim's advocate is opening an investigation into how sexual assault victims are treated on the CCSU campus.Student groups and others have called for Petroski to resign. Some students said the editor who allowed the article to go to print is the one who should take responsibility. In a written statement, Petroski said, "I messed up, and it was a stupid thing to do. ... I'm sorry to everyone I hurt."The paper's editor, Mark Rowan, told Eyewitness News that Petroski is no longer an opinion editor for the paper, and that he will continue to write for the paper under careful watch."They've done this before, and they'll do it again, and I just want to know how many times The Recorder is going to print hate, and the advisors are going to be in the back not taking responsibility for what they should be doing," student Jeanna Scarta said.Another rally was scheduled for Monday evening.
