COVENTRY, Conn. -- Firefighters returned to Coventry Lake Monday to attempt to recover an ATV all-terrain vehicle that went under water with its 11-year-old rider Sunday. The boy was unharmed, but the scare renewed concerns about the dangers of thin ice.The day after an ATV plunged through the ice of Coventry Lake, the mission to pull it from the water was unsuccessful."It's not worth anybody getting hurt for an ATV that's not coming out of there. You're not going to see that until spring," said Chief Joe Carilli of the Coventry Fire Department. The 11-year-old boy was rescued unharmed Sunday after crashing through the ice. His father, 48-year-old Jay Morgan, of Mystic, was given a ticket for allowing a minor to operate an unregistered ATV.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Eric Parker reported that as the effort to recover the ATV was under way, more all-terrain vehicles and people were seen on the ice."There's about 12 inches of ice, so you're pretty secure. Just stay on the ice," an ice fisherman told Eyewitness News."If you look in the center of the ice, you can see from one end, all the way to the other end, there is an opening, and that's from the underwater springs. People aren't aware of those things," said Capt. Robert Breault of the Coventry Fire Department.Coventry fire officials said that despite constant warnings, people continue to walk across the ice.
