Some Call For Re-Examination Of Accused Officers' Cases

Black Leaders Accuse City's Narcotics Unit Of Corruption

Leaders of the black community are calling for every case that two accused New Haven police officers handled to be revisited.

The request comes in response to last week's arrests of city police Lt. William White and Detective Justen Kasperzyk, both charged with theft after FBI stings.

Both are accused of stealing funds that should have been confiscated during drug raids.

At a news conference Tuesday, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People President Scot Esdaile alleged that White, along with other New Haven narcotics officers, is corrupt.

"Have you had other people come forward and specifically say Billy White broke the law," Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Leon Collins asked Esdaile.

"Not only Billy White, but the whole entire drug unit. That's what we've heard. That they've been going through this particular community unchecked, doing what they wanted. They had the green light to do whatever they wanted," Esdaile said.

NAACA and American Civil Liberties Union leaders questioned the effectiveness and honesty of the police department's board of commissioners, the internal affairs unit and other top New Haven officials who were in office while White and Kasperzak worked narcotics.

Last week Attorney Michael Jefferson called for the close examination of any case handled by either officer.

"At minimum, those cases have to certainly be put on hold, and if they have already been disposed of, we have to take a look at that information," Jefferson.

Jefferson said he's presently representing a woman who claims that White crossed legal lines while handling her case.

White was released on $2 million bond the day after his arrest.
