City Announces Plan To Assess PD

Law Enforcement Consultants To Help Troubled New Haven PD

The mayor of New Haven announced a plan to repair the troubled reputation of the city's police department following the arrest of two officers last week.

"Tonight, New Haven announces it's bringing in a dream team comprised of leading law enforcement officers from around the country … to look at policies and procedures and make some changes," Mayor John DeStefano said.

DeStefano and Police Chief Francisco Ortiz announced Thursday that they will bring in the Police Executive Research Forum, a team of leading law enforcement consultants from major cities across the country.

The announcement comes the week after an FBI raid, in which two officers, 39-year veteran Lt. William White and Justen Kasperzyk, were arrested on charges of stealing federal funds.

The NAACP claimed earlier in the week that the corruption runs deeper, and the mayor and police chief confirmed that more arrests are expected.

DeStefano said that the city plans to involve the community in assessing the department, along with a team of aldermen and church leaders.

"The department is not on trial," DeStefano said.

The program is expected to take a few months and cost about $130,000.
