HARTFORD, Conn. -- About 115 people were in Hartford police custody overnight after a sweep for underage drinkers at a club.Police said the club, Temptation on Asylum, was supposed to be a juice bar. Police said officers found dozens of teens at the club drinking alcohol on Thursday night.
Channel 3 Eyewitness News was first at the scene at about 5 a.m. on Friday as police led the defendants -- including the club's operator -- into police vans one by one. Those arrested have court dates set for Monday and Tuesday."They had pitchers of beer and the pitchers were on the dance floor," said Billy Thurston, 19, who was among those arrested. "Technically, people under 21 could be drinking. They arrested everyone. Everyone who was under 21 was arrested."Eyewitness News has learned that several undercover police were inside the club. Police said the officers witnessed dozens of underage teenagers drinking alcohol.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Jessica Schneider reported Thursday night was "18 and over night" and attendees over 21 were given wristbands to distinguish them from the rest of the crowd. Some who attended the event told Eyewitness News pitchers of beer were floating around on the underage floor. They said many were not drinking and that they believe they were unfairly targeted."I'm 18. I walked in there (and) 10 minutes later, I see the cops barge in. (They said,) '21 is here, 18 over there.' And, all of the sudden, they tell me I'm under arrest," said a man who was in the club but did not reveal his name.Investigators said many of the people arrested remained in police custody Friday morning in the police department's crowded booking facility.Hartford police also told Eyewitness News they are investigating other clubs and bars in the city that they said might be serving underage drinkers.Schneider reported the nightclub is now closed and the owner faces several charges.
