Police said an armed robbery suspect led officers on a multitown chase Friday evening.

The pursuit began when a man and two women threatened at security guard with a knife at the Wal-Mart near the Buckland Hills Mall in Manchester, according to police.

Officers said the guard approached the trio on suspicion of shoplifting.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Katy Zachry reported that the two women were detained inside the store, while the male suspect ran from the store and fled in a car.

According to a police, a South Windsor officer was in the area and spotted the car believed to be involved in the robbery.

Police said the car got onto Interstate 84 with the officer in pursuit. A Manchester officer joined the chase, which police said reached speeds of 70 miles per hour during rush-hour traffic.

The car led officers through Manchester, East Hartford and into Hartford, where police said the driver got off the Interstate, and led officers on backstreets.

After unsuccessfully attempting to jump a curb with his car, the man fled from the vehicle, according to police. The man ran down the street, where officers surrounded him, taking him into the custody of Hartford police, Zachry reported.

Police said the man was being transported to Manchester, where he will face numerous charges.

The two women were taken into the custody of Manchester police.
