Department Announces Plans To Fire Accused Officers

Narcotics Officers Charged With Stealing Federal Funds

POSTED: 2:40 pm EDT March 26, 2007

Two New Haven police officers who were arrested on charges of stealing federal funds were served with notices of intent to terminate by the Department of Police Services Monday.

New Haven Police Chief Francisco Ortiz recommended that Lt. William White and Detective Justen Kasperzyk be terminated for violation of departmental rules and regulations.

Ortiz also referred the charges against the officers to the Board of Police Commissioners for a hearing to be held next week.

The pair were arrested during an FBI raid two weeks ago and are now facing charges of federal corruption.

After his arrest, White applied for his pension and retirement benefits.

New Haven officials began exploring last week whether the city can reduce or revoke pensions of employees who use their positions to commit crimes.

In response to the allegations of corruption, Mayor John DeStefano announced last week that the city has hired the Police Executive Research Forumno, to make a comprehensive assessment of the city's police department.
