OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. -- Emergency crews responded to an Old Saybrook school after receiving reports of students falling ill after drinking milk.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Diana Rocco reported that six second-grade students of Kathleen E. Goodwin Elementary School fell ill after consuming the milk. A student at Old Saybrook Middle School also developed symptoms after drinking the milk. The students complained of stomach pains after drinking Guida's lowfat chocolate milk during lunch period, according to school officials. The milk was isolated and the milk distributor was contacted. Officials said the milk was found to contain a foreign substance.Administrators asked parents to monitor their children throughout the night. Parents whose children display symptoms were urged to call a doctor. Officials said the students suffered symptoms including nausea, abdominal pain, headaches, dizziness and a burning sensation in the throat. The students were evaluated by the school's nurse and those suffering abdominal pain were transported to Middlesex Clinic, and have since been released.Guida Dairy, of New Britain, voluntarily recalled half-pint containers of 1/2 percent low fat chocolate milk with a sell-by date of April 13, 2007 and product number 138.Local officials said it appeared the milk was contaminated with a sanitizer used to clean production lines, but more tests are being performed to determine what caused the illnesses."Protecting the health and safety of our school children is our paramount concern," said Commissioner of Agriculture F. Philip Prelli in a written statement. "We want to ensure the public that all parties are working together to swiftly address the issue."Officials have contacted the Federal Food and Drug Administration to report the incident. For information about the recalled milk, contact Guida Dairy at 860-224-2404 or 800-832-8929 or visit the company's Web site.
