North Haven Town Employees Charged With Misusing Funds

Authorities Investigate Misuse Of Public Funds

Two longtime town employees in North Haven have surrendered the day after the arrest of finance director Vincent Palmieri.

North Haven's community services and recreation director, Joseph Ierardi, and his wife, Patricia, did not speak as they turned themselves at the state's attorney's office in Rocky Hill late Wednesday morning.

The pair, both North Haven town employees, were flanked by their attorney, Hugh Keefe.

Authorities arrested Palmieri, the town's longtime finance director, on Tuesday on charges including hindering prosecution, tampering with evidence and conspiracy to tamper with evidence.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Len Besthoff reported the state's attorney's office began its investigation into the town's affairs several months ago after receiving an anonymous tip to its public integrity bureau.

The agency has not divulged many details about the case and those arrested haven't said much either.

"It's an allegation of misuse of public funds, an allegation of false overtime and use of gift cards allegedly used or intended for other people, things like that," Keefe said. "So far, that's what I got out of the warrant affidavit."

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Ieradi is accused of embezzling funds from the Community Services and Recreation Department, submitting false travel vouchers and asking people to destroy evidence when he learned of the investigation by the Public Integrity Bureau.

As far as the amount of money involved in the case, Keefe said he does not know.

Investigators said that when they raided Ierardi's home last month they discovered almost $5,000 in cash in a bank deposit bag underneath the couch.

Palmieri has since been released from custody on a written promise to appear and is scheduled to return to court on April 16.

The town has put all three employees on paid administrative leave. The town's Board of Finance has planned a meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the high school.
