Science Center Inches Closer To Reality

Center Scheduled To Open Next Year

POSTED: 5:47 pm EDT April 4, 2007

With 15 months of construction completed, the Connecticut Science Center is on its way to redefining the skyline of the capital city.

Fencing, cranes, cement trucks and dozens of construction workers currently fill the future site of the Connecticut Science Center. While the center is currently just 32,000 pounds of concrete, it is about 40 percent completed.

The center's project manager said the mild winter has helped in making the center, located on Adriaen's Landing, a reality.

"It was unusual weather because we had a great January and then were a little socked during February," said project manager David Elliott. "We caught up some time in January and then lost some in February, we're pretty much on schedule at this point."

The next step in the center's completion is the installation of steel.

"That is a major spot on the timeline. Once you start putting up the steel, it will really start to look like the Science Center. That will be up in mid-July," Elliott said.

Among the exhibits the center will feature are space science, Earth science, physical science, human health and Connecticut inventions. The center is also partnering with Channel 3 and will have a weather exhibit with full broadcast capabilities.

The center will also have a parking garage that will hold more than 450 vehicles and will be three-stories tall.

The center, located at Columbus and State streets next to the Connecticut Convention Center in downtown Hartford, is slated to open next year.
