A man, armed with flowers and a pellet handgun, made disturbing statements to the East Hartford mayor's secretary Wednesday, according to police.

Lawrence Palumbo Jr., 58, of East Hartford, is accused of entering the office of East Hartford Mayor Melody Currey, placing a handful of flowers on her secretary's desk and exposing what appeared to be a black handgun in his waistband, according to police.

The secretary told police that Palumbo said, "The governor knows I have this," and removed the gun from his pants. Police said Palumbo replaced the gun in his waistband and said, "College campus here we go," before walking out of the office.

The secretary ran into the mayor's office, where Currey was meeting with East Hartford Police Chief Mark Sirois. Palumbo was taken into custody without incident by Sirois, according to police.

Palumbo was charged with threatening, breach of peace, carrying a dangerous weapon and brandishing a facsimile firearm.
