Police arrested a man suspected in the fatal stabbing of his ex-girlfriend Wednesday morning.

Hamden police arrested Gary Dillon, 44, in connection with the fatal stabbing of 45-year-old Patricia Austin.

Police said Dillon and his former girlfriend, Austin, became involved in a domestic dispute at Austin's Fourth Street home. The dispute escalated to the front porch, where Dillon allegedly stabbed Austin in the chest, according to police.

"I went close to the porch, she was bloody. Some of her sons were out there, they were very upset," said Austin's neighbor, Deborah DiPietro

Austin's son chased Dillon as he ran down Fourth Street, police said. Dillon ran to the Hess Service Station on Dixwell Avenue, where he is accused of ordering two people purchasing gas out of their vehicle at knifepoint.

Officers said a green-colored Subaru was stolen during the carjacking, and was later stopped by police comma who took Dillon into police custody.

Austin was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"The woman (Austin) worked two jobs. She'd plant flowers in her spare time. I had no problems with them," DiPietro said.

Police said Austin is the mother of four teen sons, several of whom were with her at the time of her stabbing.

Officers said Austin and Dillon's relationship ended several days before the stabbing, and that Dillon was taken to the hospital following the breakup because he was reported to have been behaving irrationally.

Dillon is charged with murder, kidnapping, carjacking and criminal violation of a protective order. He is being held on a $1 million bond.
