After police tried to stop a vehicle in which an alleged beating was occurring in the back seat, a high-speed chase ensued with speeds reaching higher than 100 mph, police said.

The chase happened at about 10:50 a.m. in the Milford area, police said. They said several state troopers were involved in the pursuit.

The vehicle led police north on Highway 91 and continued to travel to Interstate 691 and Interstate 84 in the Waterbury area, until the driver, identified as Michael Tanych, damaged his vehicle while trying to drive over an embankment on I-84. Police said the driver led them in many directions and was trying to change directions on I-84.

Police said the driver was then taken into custody and is being taken back to Troop G in Bridgeport, where he will be processed and charged with many motor vehicle charges and possibly some criminal charges.

Police said Tanych has been charged with a DWI, reckless driving, engaging in a pursuit and interfering with police. He is scheduled to appear in Milford Superior Court on Monday, police said.
