UPDATED: 9:37 am EDT May 13, 2007

Milford police went to 1145 New Haven Avenue for a complaint of a domestic violence incident.

As police arrived at the location, a man was seen with a handgun and a retractable knife, police said.

An officer shot the man, identified as Roger Cadrin, in the lower right abdomen, police said.

Cadrin was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital and had to undergo surgery, hospital officials said. Police said they believe the injury is not life threatening.

The Connecticut state police major crime unit said it is responding to the scene to conduct the investigation, following the protocol for the state of Connecticut when an officer is involved in a shooting.

The name of the 14-year veteran of the Milford police department is being withheld at this time. The officer will be placed on administrative duty for a length of time to be determined by the chief of police.
