WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Authorities captured a bear in the back yard of a West Hartford house on Monday morning.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Jessica Schneider reported that a man living on The Boulevard spotted a bear in his back yard at about 8 a.m. and notified authorities. Schneider reported the bear ran through streets and an intersection.
Authorities estbalished a perimeter around the scene where the bear was in a tree at the corner of Boulevard and Prospect Street in the 10 a.m. hour.
State police Trooper 1 flew above as state Department of Environmental Protection crews tranquilized the bear and retrieved the animal from the tree."It's a male bear and it's about 100 pounds and it looks like it's a year-and-a-half old. With bears, that's the age when they usually first disburse from their mother's care and that's the time when they typically do a lot of wandering and get into locations where they shouldn't be," said Paul Rego, a DEP wildlife biologist.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Dan Kain reported that police from Hartford and West Hartford, a gaggle of media and a crowd from the neighborhood were on hand when the bear was cornered in a tree.Officials said bears do not pose significant danger so long as caution is observed."There's a little bit of danger from bears, it's very rare for them to be aggressive toward people, but if they get cornered and they don't hat a way out, there's a potential for danger, but rarely do they get aggressive (toward) people," Rego said.Kain reported the bear was tranquilized and will be examined before officials take him far away and released him into the wild.
