NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- Emergency crews responding to a medical call at a New Britain home on Thursday said they discovered what police called an arsenal of weapons.New Britain police said they found more firepower than most SWAT teams would have on hand inside the little house on Concord Street.
Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Eric Parker reported New Britain police confiscated assault rifles, machine guns, grenades and more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition.Police said the weapons belonged to Stanley Janiak, 55."He was alright. He didn't bother nobody. I don't know what happened. I was surprised," said a neighbor who asked to remain anonymous. "I was surprised that he had that thing, especially in this neighborhood."Police began investigating after ambulance workers saw rifles in one of the rooms. Police executed a criminal background check and said they discovered that the homeowner could not legally have any firearms."He was a convicted felon and, as such, he was not allowed to possess weapons," New Britain police Sgt. Darren Pearson said.Eyewitness News obtained Janiak's record and discovered that it dates back to the 1970s and includes charges that range from assault to drunken driving to illegal weapon possession. He was once charged with illegally making a bomb."It's not a cliche. In that neighborhood, you wouldn't expect it. But everyone in the city and in the state should be glad it's not out there," Pearson said.Police said they continue to examine some of the weapons seized and more charges are possible.
