A 2006 report details seven alleged alcohol-related incidents involving a state trooper, and officials said that he was arrested Saturday on alcohol-related charges.

Manchester police Sgt. Howard Beeler said he pulled over a suspected drunken driver on Saturday at exit 63 on Interstate 84, but said that it was anything but a routine stop.

Manchester police identified the man Beeler ended up arresting as Eugene Baron, 42, of Ansonia, a suspended state trooper who Beeler said made sure officers knew who he was.

"The individual identified himself as a retired state trooper," Beeler said. "We later learned that he was actually still active."

Manchester police said they later learned that Baron's was one of several cases cited in an exhaustive evaluation of state police internal affairs investigators. The internal affairs unit was criticized, accused of failing to address reports of trooper wrongdoing (Related Story).

State Public Safety Commissioner John A. Danaher III, who attended a news conference about Memorial Day Weekend road safety, refused to comment about Baron's appearance in the report and the arrest on Saturday.

However, Danaher did say: "The individual who was arrested is a member of the department, and we're aware of the fact he has a problem, and we're doing the best we can to help him with that problem. We are addressing the situation and have been addressing it since early last summer."

Danaher was appointed to his position in February, after the report was completed. Substantial reforms of the state police internal affairs unit are under way, state police said.
