Police executing a search warrant on Wednesday morning at a single-family house in West Hartford discovered a 15-year-old girl missing for nearly a year.

Bloomfield and West Hartford police searched the house at 258 Newington Road, where they discovered Danielle Erica Cramer, 15, of Bloomfield, locked in a small room hidden behind a dresser. Danielle disppeared on June 14, 2006.

  • Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Diana Rocco reported it took a while for the door to be answered when police knocked. Police arrived at the house on Wednesday morning with search warrants and an intent to collect DNA.

When they found the girl sitting in the small room, police arrested a man and a woman in the house.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Len Besthoff reported that police arrested two women and one man who lived in the house. All three remain held on $1 million bond.

Police identified the man as Adam Gault, 41, of West Hartford, a convicted felon. Police charged Gault with second-degree unlawful restraint, second-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree custodial interference, interfering with an officer, risk of injury to a minor and second-degree forgery.

Eyewitness News has learned that Gault, an animal trainer, was a business associate of the girl's parents, who run a kennel. Investigators said Gault had cooperated with police, but never acted overly helpful or seemed forthcoming with information. Police obtained warrants for phone and financial records, but came up with nothing.

Police arrested Gault in November 1997 on drug charges, in July 2003 on felony charges of failure for paying required way, and in August 2003 on charges of failure to pay required wage.

Bloomfield police went to the home with West Hartford police to serve search warrants for DNA and other evidence. Besthoff reported police later obtained another search warrant for the house and investigators have collected several boxes of evidence, bedding and a loaded handgun.

"Now, in cooperation with the West Hartford Police Department, we have a lot more to do to find out what's going on here and find out if there's any other victims," said Bloomfield police Capt. Jeffrey Blatter, referring to Gault.

Police said they do not know whether Danielle was held against her will and said she could have gone willingly to stay with Gault.

"We can all assume that a 14-year-old under the influence of a 40-year-old has been harmed in some way," Blatter said.

West Hartford police said Gault has had other inappropriate relationships with young girls; however, he was not charged because the victim would not come forward.

"He has had inappropriate relationships with a young female," West Harford police Capt. Lori Coppinger said.

"He was a person of interest rather rapidly in the investigation, we have interviewed him in a number of times," Blatter said. "He is not someone who came about in the near past, we have been in contact with him."

Police identified one of the women arrested as Ann Murphy, 40, and described her as Gault's common-law wife. Police charged Murphy with conspiracy to commit second-degree reckless endangerment, conspiracy to commit second-degree custodial interference and risk of injury to a minor.

Bloomfield police identified the second woman as Kimberly Cray, 26, of West Hartford. She was arrested at about 5:45 p.m. and charged with reckless endangerment, custodial interference and risk of injury to a minor unlawful restraint.

Bond for Gault was initially set at $500,000 and bond for Murphy was initially set at $100,000. Bonds for both were raised to $1 million by the evening.

The girl was in protective custody and being examined by medical personnel.
