NEW LONDON, Conn. -- A man was shot to death outside Ernie's Café in New London overnight, police said.New London police are investigating the shooting that they said took place just after midnight on Bank Street. Police said officers found Vernell Marshall, 23, laying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his head.New London police have released few details and the State Police Major Crimes Unit is also investigating.Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Jessica Schneider said people all around downtown told her the bar has been a source of trouble.A few days before Christmas in 2006, a Mashantucket tribal member was fatally shot in front of the same bar.Neighbors have since started a campaign to shut down the bar by setting up a MySpace page online."This bar has had trouble for a while, I'd say for a couple of years," said Gary Mastrandrea, a neighbor."I think it should be closed. It's not going to end," said Derrek Blount, a neighbor.According to the MySpace page, people have long called Ernie's "ground zero for downtown violence," and they want it shut down for good."I think after the second shooting, it should be shut down," Mastrandrea said.If you have information regarding this investigation, contact New London police by dialing 860-447-5269.
