Police described a crash early Friday morning in New Haven as one of the worst they've ever seen.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Hena Daniels reported that what is left of a mangled, overturned Ford Mustang rested on a utility pole by 6 a.m.

Sources said the car traveled up to 100 mph down Congress Avenue, nearly hitting a police officer's cruiser just after 1 a.m.

Sources told Eyewitness News that the driver lost control and hit a utility pole and a tree before rolling over at Howard and Sixth streets.

Crews extricated the body using the Jaws of Life as the utility pole snapped in half and rested against the wire.

The driver, later identified as Robert Kimble, 32, of Wallingford, was killed instantly in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
