NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- A New Britain man claims that the city's library refused to put his donated CD in its catalog because the disc contains a song condemning hate crimes on gay people.Daniel Healy said that he tried to donate the CD single of the song, which benefits anti-hate organizations, to the New Britain library, but it denied the donation. The library told Eyewitness News that it didn't decline the disc because of its content."Absolutely not, that could not be further from the truth," said library director Candice Brown.
Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Ray Daudani reported that a search of the library's catalog turns up more than 700 gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered items, including a recently bought compilation CD that contains the tribute song, among others."It was a double CD with many artists on it, and we decided that was actually, we felt, a good compromise to put into our collection, and that it would be popular by people and they would listen to that song," Brown said.Brown said that she didn't think that having a single on the library's shelves would do the library much good."It is a librarian's prerogative to decide what goes into the collection. We really felt an item with just one song on it, most people wouldn't find the item on the shelf," Brown said. The library offered to put Healy's disc with the single up for sale, but Healy refused. The library's board has invited Healy to speak at its meeting in late September.
