New Charges Filed In Danielle's Case

Kidnapping Charges Filed Against Gault, Murphy, Cray

New charges were filed Wednesday against the trio charged in the yearlong disappearance of a teenager found locked in a storage room in their home, police said.

Adam Gault, Ann Murphy and Kimberly Cray were arrested in June in connection with the disappearance of Bloomfield teen Danielle Cramer.

Charges of kidnapping and interfering with prosecution were filed against the West Hartford residents on Wednesday.

In addition to kidnapping, additional charges of sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor were filed against Gault, who had already pleaded not guilty to sexual assault, risk of injury to a minor, unlawful restraint, reckless endangerment, custodial interference, interfering with a police officer and forgery.

Gault faces 11 counts of sexual assault charges.

Police said that Gault's girlfriend, Murphy, and Cray helped him keep the 15-year-old inside the West Hartford home for nearly a year.

Gault, 41, has denied having sexual contact with Danielle, who ran away from her Bloomfield home in June 2006 when she was 14 years old and moved in with Gault, who worked with her stepfather years ago.

"It is our belief that the manner in which Adam Gault pursued the juvenile was the equivalent of using force and that belief was supported today upon the decision of a superior court judge to sign the warrant," Bloomfield Police Capt. Jeffrey Blatter said.

Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Susan Raff reported that the arrest warrant was opened Wednesday, and revealed graphic details that the defense attorneys said came as a surprise to them.

In the warrant, police allege that the 15-year-old girl had an abortion and that Gault may have been the father.

The warrant says Danielle had the abortion at Planned Parenthood in West Hartford but would not identify the father. Police obtained a search warrant to test the fetus. It had been sent to a diagnostic lab in Massachusetts, which is standard procedure.

Raff reported that the warrant claims that DNA tests implicate Gualt.

"I've never had anything close to this. I didn't know this, most people don't know this," Gault's attorney Gerald Klein said. "I thought that when a woman had a termination of pregnancy, that that was the end of it, so to speak."

Police had feared Danielle for dead when they searched Gault's home June 6. An officer pushed aside a dresser blocking a door and found her locked in a small storage area.

Gault is being held on $1.5 million bond.

In addition to kidnapping, Murphy and Cray were charged Wednesday with hindering prosecution and risk of injury to a minor. They had already pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit unlawful restraint, conspiracy to commit risk of injury to a minor and interfering with police.

Murphy is being held on $750,000 bond and Cray is being held on $500,000 bond.

Cray's attorney said that there is not enough evidence to charge his client in the case.

"Police are alleging that both (Cray and Murphy) were aware that Gault was having sexual relationships with the young girl, but there is no proof of that in the warrants," Cray's attorney Michael Georgetti said.

Christine Hale, a friend of Kimberly Cray's told Eyewitness News that Cray escaped from an abusive relationship. Hale said that she believes that troubled women stay with Gault because he is the lesser of two evils.

"In her mind, Adam gave her safety and rescued her," Hale said. "She feels loyal to him."
